On Tuesday February 28 a strong working relationship was formed between Tritton Mines and Nyngan High School, as five students were signed up as school-based apprentices and one as a school-based trainee.

The students will be involved in a number of areas including electrical, business administration, diesel mechanic and carpentry.
Australian school-based apprenticeships and traineeships provide senior secondary school students with hands-on industry experience, and the ability to work towards or complete a nationally recognised qualification while they complete their Higher School Certificate.
Mr Chad Bliss, principal of Nyngan High School spoke positively about the opportunity Tritton Mines was providing local students and how he looked forward to building on this relationship in the coming years.The students completed their induction at the mine on Wednesday February 29 and many have already spent time in Dubbo attending the compulsory TAFE residential schools. Mrs Roz Darcy (Human Resource Superintendent for Tritton Mines) said “the company has a preference of employing locally and training people in the various skills required to become an integral member of the mine workforce”.
Mrs Noelene Walsh (Careers Advisor, Nyngan High School) explained how the students were very keen and excited to be embarking on this journey and outlined the advantages of the apprenticeships/traineeships being School Based. “Being able to continue studying at school while gaining Industry experience is just fantastic. The added bonus of being in your home town and having the support of your family and the local community means the level of success is heightened”.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are available in a number of areas. Currently Joshua Sibbald in Year 12 is completing a School Based Apprenticeship in Plumbing with local plumber Luke Smith. Joshua is a very committed student and travels to Orange every three weeks to complete his TAFE component.
Mrs Walsh would like to increase the number of Nyngan High School students involved in School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships and extends a personal invitation to all local businesses to contact her to discuss the many opportunities available to them as employers.
