That was 21 years ago.
And after over two decades involved with the Group 10 Junior Rugby League, Power, the junior league’s long-time president, has been honoured with life membership.
Power was bestowed with the honour at the Group 10 JRL annual general meeting on September 18, and says the the whole process came as a bit of a shock.
“It was a surprise, really. I got nominated and then it goes from there … it was a surprise but much appreciated,” Power said, becoming the eighth Group 10 Junior Rugby League life member.
“My son started, so naturally I started coaching and always been involved that way. I enjoy it. It‘s good fun.”
Power started out at Orange CYMS’ juniors – where he’s also a life member – and first became involved with Group 10’s junior league as the green and golds’ delegate.
He then joined the committee as a junior vice president before becoming the boss five seasons ago.
Power says a lot has changed in his time involved on the committee, but the process of selection Group 10 junior representative sides, the under 13s Group 10 tour of New Zealand and the continued growth of junior league tag in the region was something he is proud of having overseen each process.
“But none of it has been just me,” Power quickly added.
“We’ve got a great committee and everyone is involved and every supportive.
“And the support of my family has been great as well.”
Power joins current committee members Christine Smith and Angela Buckley as life members, while Rob Clarkson, Dave Ferguson, Loretta Graham, Bryan Hutchinson and Dick Hobson are also on the list.
