The Air Chief Marshal spoke during the annual luncheon sponsored by the Order of Australia Association on Saturday.
The event was organised by a small committee in Dubbo to bring together people from the western region who had received an award in the Order of Australia, Australian Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Public Service, Police Service or Emergency Services honours systems.
Award recipients and friends from Dubbo, Narromine, Trangie, Warren, Nyngan, Wellington, Parkes and Sydney attended the luncheon.
Air Chief Marshal Houston AC, AFC (Retired) spent 41 years in service in the Australian Defence Force, before calling it a day last year.
He is also the chairman of the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board and Air Services Australia and the head of the council for the Order of Australia.
The musical entertainment was provided by students from the Macquarie Conservatorium led by Sue Hovenden.
