16 speciality shop centre will make shopping much more
“convenient” for West Dubbo resident Alyssa Warland, who lives just meters from the Delroy Central Shopping centre development.
But other nearby residents have voiced their angst over the project, saying it will greatly increase traffic flow past their homes and take business away from shops in the CBD.
“I don’t think it will be good, a lot of people use the area as a parkland and I don’t think it’s fair to take away trade from shops down town,” a Baird Drive resident who wished to remain anonymous said.
The resident whose home is just meters from the development to be built on the corner of Baird Drive and Minore Road said noise from construction work would be a downfall, and young people “hanging” around the shopping centre once it was built was also a concern.
“But I guess it’s progress . . . this development is really a two-way thing, some people are for it others are against it,” he said.
“Personally I don’t want it to go ahead because I can hop in the car and go down the main street to shop so I don’t see why everyone else can’t.”
The new development has been welcomed by Baird Drive resident Ms Warland who also lives across the road from the planned shopping centre and is looking forward to “convenient” shopping.
“It’s great news, I won’t have to drive to the CBD to pick up a few items from Woolworths now,” she said.
A possible increase in the amount of traffic to the currently “quiet” area does not bother Ms Warland.
“Once everything is built I can’t see it being all that noisy,” she said.
John Black and his wife moved to Dubbo from Cobar a year ago, the couple live opposite the site marked for the $6 million centre, and are in two minds about the development.
“My wife thinks it’s great but I’m still a bit indifferent because of the extra traffic,” Mr Black said.
“A shopping centre is needed
as this area is really taking off,
you only have to look at the Kintyre Estate and see how
many new houses are going up,” he said.
Mr Black said he was aware of the proposed development before he purchased his home.
“We were kept in the dark a little about it . . . as we get older the shops will be more convenient for us,” he said.
